The Biotech Training Grant program is a distinguished program that provides rich training experiences for our predoctoral students.  Since it was established in 1991, the program has provided rich interdisciplinary training to over 100 predoctoral students. The long-term impact of this program is evidenced by the outstanding productivity and high percentage of trainees that continue careers in science, typically academia or industry. 

Alumni Careers

Among graduating BTP trainees of the past 10 years, 100% are still employed in fields related to science and engineering. Our program alumni  hold distinguished positions in biotech, academia, pharma, consulting, and entrepreneurial ventures.

Industrial internships

The industrial internship is considered to be a significant benefit for students participating in this program.  Companies at which students have recently completed their internships include: Auris Surgical Robotics, BridgeBio, Genentech, Ilumina, Johnson & Johsnon (Janssen Business Development), KF Business Ventures/Hibernation Therapeutics, Microsoft, Penumbra, Inc., Second Genome, Inc., Sofinnova, Thermo Fischer Scientific, Verily Life Sciences (formerly Google X), and XCella Biosciences.

Internship spotlights

PhD retention and completion  

Our program has a 97% completion and retention rate over the past 10 years, with 58 out of 59 trainees having completed their PhD program (or still completing training), with an average time to degree of 5.7 years.  (By comparison, the national average is 50-57% of students completing their PhD program, with average time to degree of 6.6 years.)

Publications

Students who have completed this NIH T32 biotech training program have an exemplary publication record, averaging 4.4 total publications and 1.8 first author publications each.
